The ingenious Eco Pod can be constructed as either a 3 bedroom home; a school; an office or a community building and uses solar and/or wind power to generate the electricity it uses. The Eco Pod also has the great advantage of being constructed in the very short time frame of 2-4 weeks.
The main drive behind the design of this innovative building is to show Australians, who are amongst the largest emitters of carbon dioxide per capita, that we have the option to live, learn and work in buildings that significantly reduce our carbon footprint.
From February 2010 the Eco Pod will open as a functioning display of a home that is carbon-neutral in regard to heating and cooling costs over a 12 month period.
The homes are rated 7.5 stars under the First Rate Energy Rating System and come complete with integrated PV solar panels, solar hot water, double glazed windows, compressed straw panels in the walls and ceiling, and a cutting edge air conditioning system that uses only 10-20% of the power required for refrigerated air conditioning.
This display is the 3rd generation of Eco Villages Worldwide’s Eco Pod buildings and is a real breakthrough in an integrated and flexible building for future generations.
